Summary
Pina basin is a shallow estuary which is separated from ocean by a natural reef dyke of calcareous sandstone and into which several rivers flow. Pina basin receives large quantities of untreated or little treated sewage and is therefore polluted, eutrophic and hypoxic. Hypoxia has affected meiobenthic community structure.
