Hypoxia in Narragansett Bay was first recorded in the 1950s. It has reduced and killed benthos. Narrangansett Bay is hypoxic from June to September, related to the high nutrient loads. Dissolved oxygen content was widespread by the 1980s and declined from the 1990s to 2000s.
